I ordered a book last week sometime, the request was accepted, the sender said 'will mail by' a certain date, and then didn't. I got an email from the system saying that because the sender had not responded, they were adding the book to my wish list for me. When I checked it, it says I'm 1 of 4. How is that possible? Quite frankly it's a bit of an obscure book and there's no way three other people ordered it overnight.

I'm just interested to know how this works, if anyone knows!

If you get offered a WL book and it times out, goes lost or gets cancelled by the sender-you get put back in first place.  If you cancel the request-then you have to go back to the end of the line.

yes, 3 other people did order it after you did as crazy as that may sound.

It wasn't a wish list book, it was available in the system when I ordered it...

Weird. Three other people wanted the same book on the same day?? Stranger things have happened I suppose! I just didn't like thinking that I had somehow jumped ahead of people in line (and who knows how long they've been in line) because the sender cancelled my request. I wouldn't like that to happen to me, to get bumped because of someone else.

I'll go with thinking that I'm one of four people who all wnated the same book at the same time!

It's easier to think that it happened when you realize there are over 35,000 people on the site now. We don't know how many, since PBS doesn't list actual membership, but 34,700+ have profiles, and since I know a lot of people that don't have profiles and participate in the forums, imagine how many more that don't participate in the forums ther are that don't have profiles. We could easily have 40,000+ members. Pretty easy to find 4 people who want the same book at the same time in those kind of numbers :)

If it was a newly posted book, it would have shown up on that list and others would have seen it & may have decided to also order it. There's also the Under the Hood page which shows recent transactions, so again, 3 people may have seen you order it, and decided to get it too.

I have a book in my TBR pile that's been coming on and off WL since I got it.  It'll get 2 or 3 people on WL, then no one on WL, then 2 or 3 people.  One of these I'll get around to reading and posting it while it's WL.

yep, i've seen a few do the on & off WL thing.

when i posted a couple of unusual books, i noticed that while they had very short WLs when i posted them, and the WLs got longer after they were posted.  so at a guess someone saw them in the newly posted list and added to their WL, and then other people may have done the same, or seen it on the daily wishlist and added it after that.

Ah hah!! A plausible explanation... and a new thing I didn't know about at PBS! I'm off to check the daily wish list now...

You can find the "under the hood" link among the cloud of other blue links at the bottom of the page.

Also - It takes about a week for a request to time out, so those other wishers didn't necessarily all request it on the same day, it could have happened over the course of a week.
