Over the last year I have collected and read all 4 of John Shor's books and rated all of them amazing (5 star). They all have given me so much enjoyment and I couldn't absorb them fast enough. With THE WISHING TREES, in my opinion, John has outdone himself!

Ian loses his beloved wife, Kate, to an unnamed fatal illness, leaving him to raise his 10 year old daughter, Mattie, alone and through profound grief. Nineteen months after her death, Kate send them on a journey to the countries in Asia where she and Ian fell in love. She asks Ian to show Mattie these areas and tries, through notes and poems to each to help them resolve their grief and learn to be happy and love again.

The wishing trees are a custom,in at least Japan, whereby prayers are written or drawn and rolled into scrolls and placed in trees with the expectation that the lost one will see and read them from Heaven.

This is a story of Ian and Mattie's journey through grieving to find happiness and learn to live in joy without her. I don't think this book could have been written by a man who has not deeply loved a woman and their child. It is truly beautiful. I am in awe.

This is a beautifully written book, bound to touch your heart and soul. What a treasure!

Another absolutely gorgeous story from John Shors. I was swept away by the story, the realistic characters and the vibrant sense of place. A real treat for all of the senses. I'm off to look for another one of his books shortly. Shors has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Very, very highly recommend.
