I'm drawing a blank here...what could happen to bump me two places back in the Wishlist for a book? This morning I was number 4, now I'm number 6.

someone else was put back in the WL line because they received a RWAP book. Or came out of vacation hold. Or the book they ordered went lost.

From the Help Center:

Why did I move *backward* on my Wish List?

This happens when another member who was "ahead of you" in line previously (and who got an offer of the book already) gets back into line, for one of several reasons:

  • The member's Wish List book never arrived, and was declared lost in the mail
  • The member's Wish List transaction was canceled by the sender
  • The member had had her account on hold, and has now returned from vacation and unHeld her account. She will go back into line at her previous position when she does this: if she was "ahead of you" before, you will move back a space.

Please be assured that we would NEVER put another member ahead on the Wish List without good cause--in order to go ahead of others on the Wish List, a member MUST have Wish Listed that item earlier (on an earlier date) than they did.

This use to happen every once in a while on my wish list now it is a daily occurance.  I usually have at least 2 or 3 items every time I look that have moved backwards at least one spot if not more.  I am on here at least every other day.  Maybe it is just because it is summer time and everyone is going on vacation?

I am glad someone else had asked the same question as I was getting frustrated.  Thank you!

It's vacation season.  So there are probably people constantly coming on and off vacation hold.

And folks are using vacation hold to control their costs.

I only notice going backwards when I'm close to #1 on the list.  I have one book I was #1 for a few days.  Then, I went to #2 for about a week.  Now, I'm back at #1 and I SO want someone to post it ASAP so I get it and don't get bumped back to #2 again.

I've learned to be patient.  I have so many other things to read and I know eventually I'll get that book or I'll buy it elsewhere.

This happened to me just the other day. I finally got to the top of the list for one of my wishlist books, only to get turned down because of my RC, and now I'm number two (rather than back to number one).

By the way, the RC asks that hardbacks have dust jackets, and that there be no highlighting or writing on text pages. The reason for cancelling the order?

"It's a used book."

That tells me nothing. Every book on my shelf is a used book. It's irritating, but I've come to the conclusion that if the other person can't decipher my RC, I probably don't want their books anyway. ;-)

Pam, that only tells you that that member  doesn't read RC's, doesn't accept RC's, or misunderstood the RC.  Some people take any RC to be a personal insult even though it isn't meant to be.  To them a RC like yours indicates to them the thought that you don't want a "used book."  It may be just as well, because if they don't want to mess with a RC - you're probably better off.
