i'm sure you regulars have seen about 4 billion WL questions, so i apologize for throwing another one on the pile.  i did a quick search for this and didn't readily see anything about it.

when i joined about 3 weeks ago i put a book on my WL.  the book's info said that 7 people were wishing for it at the time i added it.  when i hovered over the (!) it said that i was in position 11 of 11.  i thought "yay, that must mean that 4 copies are floating around out there pending on someone's WL."  well.. 3 weeks later i'm still in position 11 of 11 and now it says that there are 8 people wishing for the book.  i'm confused.

i would have thought that i would have gone up in the list or that the # of people wishing would have gone down.  i don't get it.

I am confused too.   How can you be 11 out of 11 if there are only 8 wishers??

You can move down on the WL for several reasons.   Here's what the Help center has to say:

This happens when another member who was "ahead of you" in line previously (and who got an offer of the book already) gets back into line, for one of several reasons:

  • The member's Wish List book never arrived, and was declared lost in the mail
  • The member's Wish List transaction was canceled by the sender
  • The member had had her account on hold, and has now returned from vacation and unHeld her account. She will go back into line at her previous position when she does this: if she was "ahead of you" before, you will move back a space.

Please be assured that we would NEVER put another member ahead on the Wish List without good cause--in order to go ahead of others on the Wish List, a member MUST have Wish Listed that item earlier (on an earlier date) than they did.

I'm with Coz  too - confused!  I'd consider myself a regular and I'd be wondering too if I was the 11th person and only 8 wishers for the book. Are you looking at it correctly - does it say "8 of 11" (or something of that nature)? In that case you're the 8th person with 11 total wishers.

If that's not it - beats me. I'd check with R&R because something sounds a little off.

i figured the listed # of wishers was less than the # on the wish list because there were books pending on someone's wishlist.  but after the 48 hrs i would expect both the numbers to go down.  it's been this way for weeks.  even with the info posted above from the help center i would expect that my 11 out of 11 number would change at some point after 48 hrs and not stay the same for weeks on end.

who knows.  maybe the (!) number is wrong and i'll be pleasantly surprised one day by a "Wish Granted" email.

I've noticed this many times and can't figure out what the answer is--maybe the actual book postings don't get updated immediately or something.  I think this is question for R&R.

I believe (but cannot prove) that the number on the book details page doesn't count members who are on vacation with auto-request on.

If this is the case then it makes perfect sense.  thanks!
