Author: John Straley
Sitka, Alaska, is a subarctic port surrounded by snow-dusted mountains. In addition to honest work, there is a lot of alcohol consumed and other people's money appropriated. Cecil Younger is the black sheep son of a straight-arrow family. He writes poems, drinks too much, broods about the lovely girl who left him, and works as a private investigator in the port of Sitka, Alaska. Now he is being paid handsomely to probe the ugly murder of a Native American hunting guide. It is a case that will take him from the gritty Alaskan urban lower depths to the dark heart of the northern wilderness, and from a sordid tangle of sex and greed to primitive myth and magic. It is a bitingly vivid and suspenseful journey, and he takes you with him every swift, dangerous step and leap of the way.

A different sort of mystery based on an Eskimo story. A realistic view into an alcoholic's view of the world. That was a little depressing, but the mystery itself was good. Kept me guessing.

This was a wonderful blending of Indian folklore and modern day Alaska. An old mystery heats up when an investigator is asked to look into a two-year-old murder. With the confessed killer in jail, someone is desperate to stop any further digging into the past. Which is highly suspicious and leads to an interesting murder mystery.
