Several years ago, Mrs. Deen ran a series of articles on "Great Women of the Bible" in her newspaper column. The unexpectedly huge response launcehd her on the research which emanated in this book. It led her into ten large libraries (including the New York Public Library and the Library of Congress) and more years of labor in an exhaustive search for material.
In addition, Mrs. Deen has assembled what is perhaps the largest private library of books on Bible women. She discovered that, while writers from Harriet Beecher Stowe to those of the present day have written voluminously on women of the Bible, only a small percentage of the women appear in any one book. In her search and research, Mrs. Deen had been ably assisted by her husband Edgar Deen, who found time during his former duties as Mayor of Fort Worth to keep on the lookout for material on this great theme. In a sense this book is the Deens' lifework.
316 concise biographies are contained in this volume, including 52 searhing studies of women in the foreground, more than 125 shorter sketches of named women and more than 125 sketches of the nameless women in the background.« less
