Women in the Church: A Biblical Study of the Role of Women in the Church
Women in the Church A Biblical Study of the Role of Women in the Church Author:Samuele Bacchiocchi Few subjects have stirred up as much controversy in recent years as that of the role of women in the church. There is hardly a church which has not been affected by this controversy. Churches which have adopted the policy of ordaining women are experiencing polarization, turmoil and even scisms within their ranks. — Many people simply do not kn... more »ow what to believe largely because of two extreme interpretations given to those key passages in 1 Corinthians, 1 Timothy, and Ephesians. Some interpret these passages most restrictively, making them forbid any teaching or speaking role for women in the church. Others interpret these same passages as culturally conditioned, making them permit the appointment of women to any church office, including that of elder or pastor.
Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi provides in this book a much needed balanced interpretation and application of the overall Biblical teachings on the role of women in the church. His painstaking research compellingly shows that while Scripture excludes the appointment of women to the representative roles of priests, elders or pastors, it does include them in the supportive ministry of the church and in the participation in public worship. The reason for this Biblical distinctive derives not from the cultural conventions of the times, but from the distinct, and yet complimentary roles for men and women established by God at creation.
As expressed in the forward by Prof. Wayne Grudem, "This is an extremely valuable book for anyone interested in the current debate over women's roles in the church. I think this will clear up much of the confusion people feel over this issue today."« less
