Ok so I ordered a book from a member then he accepts and the sends me a PM saying that the book has some highlighting, and if still want the book he will send another with it because it's damaged. Ok so I don't want the one with the hihglighting. So my question is if I cancel the order and order the book again will it go to a differant member or wil it got to him again. Thanks in advance Tabitha

Yes it will.  I recommend putting on a RC, requestor condition, that would cover that one book.  Remove it after this book rolls over to the next member.  Or have him cancel his book.

You shouldn't cancel the order.  It is his responsibility to do so, so that the request will go to the next person in FIFO.  If you cancel and reorder, the request will go straight back to highlighting guy.

He may say no because if he cancels he loses his place in the FIFO line. If he refuses and it is general FIFO request, cancel it and add an RC that states something like "If I order Book Titled Whatever and it has highlighing in it, please decline this RC so that my request may move to the next person with the book available". If its a WL book, make him cancel before you put the RCs on and then he can repost and deny your RCs.

but he shouldn't have posted it in the first place as it doesn not meet PBS posting conditions-unless it is a text book.

If you look at the recently revised Help Center Docs- any book can be posted under the textbook/workbook rules because any book could be used in a classroom or as a workbook. Because they have to PM and get acceptance before the book can be sent, no one can sneakily send a book with highlighting/writing/underlining in it.

What is the definition of a textbook?

Actually, the way the system and rules are designed, it does not matter what the "objective definition" of a textbook is.  The club members decide this - as long as the rules in the Book Condition Criteria for 'Swappability' at PBS are followed.  See the explanation and examples below.

If a member considers her book a textbook she may Post it with underlining/highlighting/writing on text pages, according to the "textbook exception" in the Book Condition Criteria for 'Swappability' at PBS; BUT since the textbook exception in the Book Condition Criteria for 'Swappability' at PBS require her to contact the requestor and obtain PM consent to the book's condition, she won't be in the position of sending a "stealth textbook" to someone who doesn't expect to receive one.

Sue, if you read the newsletter from a few months ago (does anybody know which one it was?), in the letters section, it discusses the textbook issue. Basically, from the viewpoint of the PBS team, pretty much any book has the possibility of having been used as a textbook in a class setting, so as long as the PM and consent requirements are obeyed, then it's perfectly kosher. They assume that only certain types of books will be accepted by requestors with highlighting and such present, but it doesn't stop people from posting other types of books that were used as textbooks, though they'll likely have to continuously cancel requests until they eventually give up.

I'd report him to PBS if he refuses to cancel it, he can't send a highlighted book without prior consent from you, all he can do is cancel it, that is his responsibility.

I'm wondering if this is me? Someone ordered a book from my shelf. When I picked it up to mail it, I noticed that it had some highlighting (about 20 lines total). It was used as a textbook. I pm'd the requester and said if they didn't want it, I would cancel it. I actually said that if I didn't hear back I'd cancel it.

Now it's been auto-cancelled by the PBS glitch. I posted it in book bazzar under "wish list unpostables".

Should I have handled it differently?

Ann - IMO you handled this correctly and I would have done the same.  PBS is reactivating all the requests, so you will need to cancel the request once it is reactivated.
