This book compares Shakespeare's plays with what was happening to him personally and in the world politically at the time he was writing. It gets a bit fanciful -- but them I find all literary criticism a bit fanciful. It is an easy historical read, and added to my enjoyment of his work.

A very intriguing look at William Shakespeare. Lots of "supposing" and "guessing", but the author made some very valid points and definitely did his research. I am not a big fan of Shakespeare, but I certainly feel I know him better after reading this book.

There's a lot of speculation in this book. If that doesn't bother you, you'll probably really like Greenblatt's suppositions about the life and writings of Shakespeare. He is a good writer.

Complete with portaits, this book provides a look at how Shakespeare became the great playwright that he was, and is.
