Nine mid-length stories: many of which ring the same bell. Most are set in foreign locations from the Pacific islands to Europe from the days of the Nazi build-up to the World War II theaters. Only one story has something to say about a battle; most (and even that one) are about the populace that is tangential to and caught in the fighting. A of the few stories do escape from this basic scenario. Well written prose, the better stories ring true today: corporate greed, corrupt politics, the search for power, all of the above.
