Hey everyone!  I mailed a book with delivery confirmation on 2/10/12, however there is nothing listed under details except the confirmation #.  There is no message that says delivery confirmation # received at my local post office.  Normally this shows up right away.  I understand that many times there are no scans along the way until it reaches the recipient.  Also the little mail truck does not show up at  even though I realize it's just for fun.  I also entered the confirmation number into the postal service website and receive a message that says " Delivery status information is not available for your item via this web site. A return receipt after mailing may be available through your local Post Office."  What exactly does this mean? I am beginning to wonder if someone took the book out of my mailbox before the carrier could pick it up or if it got lost after being picked up by the postal service.  I have never had this problem before and am just wondering if I am worrying for nothing or if the book truly is lost or misrouted.  Thanks for any thoughts or comments!

It might mean that your post office has changed it's policy on when they scan books. Many local POs no longer scan books unless we take them to the counter. They will usually get scanned at the sorting hub.

I had a few packages last week like that too. Just the number, nothing else. It's just a glitch, or an update in progress.

The one I mailed yesterday got scanned, so it appears that everything is back to normal.

ETA: One of my packages that was never scanned was just marked received by the requester. So, it didn't disappear after all. smiley

So, you may be running into the new postal changes. The way that DC reports changed when the PO changed the rates and started offering DC for free in some cases.

So ....

If you printed your postage (including DC) from PBS ... you will not be able to track your package on www.usps,com anymore. You can only see the tracking on PBS. And, the DC was free.

If you printed ONLY DC from PBS, then if your package was Media Mail, you can track it. If your package was First Class, you cannot. You paid for DC on the Media Mail package, and it was free on the First Class package.

(And, if I have this wrong, someone please correct me).

Thanks everyone for your responses!  The tracking details actually show today that the book was delivered yesterday!  Receiver hasn't marked it received yet, but at least I feel so much better knowing the book wasn't lost!  Sara, thank you for the update about not being able  to track  through the postal system since I used DC through PBS.  I wasn't aware of that, so thanks!  Happy Reading everybody!  :)
