I"m playing in the Highlander Swap in the Games forum and I was reminded of a book I read once.  No title, no character names and no author so I'm hoping someone here can help me.

She is a Scottish laird. He is a British soldier (??). He marries her while he's drunk. They sleep together but she doesn't "enjoy" herself because he's so drunkl She makes him wear a kilt but he won't let her teach him how to fold it correctly (he knots at his waist and it's about to fall off all the time) until they make love again.

There is a hidden Laird's room underground that he gets locked in at one point. He buys her 300 pairs of shoes to prove his love to her (she has none).

His grandfather was in love with her mother/aunt?? earlier in his life. At one point, they go to London and his grandfather throws a ball in their honour and she meets husband (Jamie??) ex mistress. Mistress tries to point out that wife is one step up from a pig farmer (being from Scotland) but wife says as his wife she is a XXX (countess, duchess?) and she outranks mistress.

It is NOT a Cyster novel.

ETA:  It wasn't a Harlequin series romance either.

Could it be Beloved Highlander by Sara Bennett?  It is similar, but I don't know if it is the one.

No, but thanks for the suggestion.  I guess this is just going to be one of those books that stays elusive.

Oh, the shoes thing sound SO familiar.  Not the rest though, so maybe I'm thinking of a different book.

Pam, that's it!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

ETA:  Just wanted to report I've ordered it.  My computer was acting funky last night so it wouldn't let me complete my order.  Soon, soon, soon, this book will be back in my hands!
