I got several sample books  (FREE)  from my local carpet store and have wrapped a small book in a pretty floral vinyl.  I always use lots of tape, but want to be sure that it will stick.  Has anyone tried this?

I've gotten books like this. If it's not wrapped tightly to the book, it rips. Almost every book I have gotten wrapped in wallpaper, the wallpaper has been ripped, just barely hanging on. But maybe my side of country is harder on media mail! :P

I wrap most of the books I send out in wallpaper with a plastic underlayer and have never had a complaint. In fact, I get quite a few compliments about how well the wrapping holds up in transit. However, to answer your question, I stay away from the vinyl wallpapers because I've found that tape doesn't stick to it very well: I'd have a package ready to go, I thought, but would find that the tape had come loose.

I buy regular paper wallpaper at thrift stores for generally a dollar or two for a roll, but have found it three for a dollar at times. A roll will wrap at least 20 packages, so it's very economical to use.

I'm also a wallpaper-er.  I've been using it for a couple of years and I've had one comment that the tape didn't hold up well.  And yep, it was for a book wrapped in vinyl wallpaper.

One roll goes a long way... and the packages are pretty!  :)

The few I have got wrapped in wallpaper have arrived okay. I gues like any wrapper, the more tape, the better.
