I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but I just want to verify:

I have a book with the original owner's name, address, and phone number written in ink on the title page.  I believe this is allowable, since it is not obscuring text.

My opinion question:  Should I mark thru this information with a Sharpie or other pen, assuming it doesn't bleed thru?  The book in question is very old, the person probably doesn't live there anymore, but I feel weird sending this out with that much information.

I would cross it out if you can. If you are worried about bleeding, fold up a piece of paper a few times and put it under the page before you use the marker.

Actually, even with crossing out, you would need to PM the member to make sure it is OK since it is on the Title page (OK on flyleaf or inside one of the covers but only an author signature is ok on the title page).

From the help center:

No writing or highlighting or underlining on text pages

  • a signature or note on the flyleaf or inside front or back cover is OKAY
  • an author's signature on the title page is OKAY
  • writing or highlighting or underlining on the text pages is NOT OKAY
    • Exception: if it is a textbook or workbook, these are expected to have highlighting/underlining/writing
      • if you post a textbook/workbook, the condition must be described to the requestor in a Personal Message
      • AND the described condition MUST BE AGREED TO in a reply PM before the book is sent
      • This is the one of the ONLY three cases in which a PM exchange about a book is required before the book can be sent (the others are for travel guidebooks and cookbooks--see below).

Because the title page is not considered a text page by most (the Team has said they believe "text" to mean part of the story), a PM would probably not be required. It might be a nice thing to do, but it would not be a case where a book should be marked as a Problem when received if a PM was not sent. This person's name being there is no different than an author's signature or a library stamp,

Yes, I don't think a PM is required either. The book is postable as is.

You could sharpie out the address, I guess.

But I am not sure why it would matter. Even if someone crazy ordered the book from you, I sincerely doubt they will start to stalk someone whose name and address (probably in a different state altogether, and probably from long ago anyway) are written inside the cover.

So much easier to stalk someone you already know, KWIM?

Yes, it would be postable as it is now.

Personally, I'd look at it this way: If the person didn't blank it out when they donated/traded it, then they aren't concerned and neither am I.

I wouldn't marker it either. Sometimes I will place a blank mailing label over a phone number, but usually I leave things be.

I'll just leave it alone.  It's not obscuring anything at all, it just feels weird to me to send it out like that.  When I weeded out my keepers, before I donated or swapped them, I blacked out my name (on the inside cover written on a bookplate) with a Sharpie. But I've had issues with stalker-y types.

Thanks for the input!
