I just received a book that I didn't order. It looks as if the sender mixed up her books while packing to ship as the book has the packing slip for the book I received with another PBS member's name and address. I've emailed the sender to let her know of this and if she'd like me to send the book to the proper recipient, I'd be happy to do so if she'd send me a credit to cover the postage. She has not replied to my message.

So, what happens now? Do I just wait for the book to go lost in the system? And then I'll be back at the head of the wish list for this book after that? I browsed the help docs, but wasn't clear on the answer. Thanks.

Yes, wait  until it goes lost, do not mark it received unless you actually receive the book.   Also if the member does send you a credit and the other member a credit - to swap them to the correct locations - I wouldn't mark it rec'd until the book is in your hands.

Thanks, jubead. I thought as much, but wasn't sure. This was the first time this has happened to me.

The book won't go "lost" in the system until September 25th. So long to wait, and the wish list is at 760! So happy that I won't lose my place, but It's a bummer to have to wait at least three more weeks to be offered the book again.

Think on the bright side - it may work out after the Labor Day  weekend.  She may not be responding because she is away and next week she will work on straightening it out!  I hope it works out for you.

this is what the Sender should do...from help docs - if she is new maybe she doesn't know what to do....

If you mixed up two requests and sent the wrong books to two people:

  • Contact both requestors.
    • Use the PM buttons on the active transactions for the books to let them know what happened.
  • You can ask the requestors to send the books to each other
    • You provide the addresses in PMs.
  • When the requestors get the books they requested, they can mark them received.
    • This means the sender "breaks even" on these transaction, but each book ends up with the person who requested it.
  • If the books are delayed enough to have been declared lost at PBS:
    • the requestors can still mark them received when they get them (giving you credit) from their Transaction Archives(I underlined the bullet point for emphasis)

I just got the wrong book from someone, and I clicked RWAP: Wrong  Book.  Is this not the right thing to do?

Amy--

RWAP: Wrong Book is for specific issues:

Wrong-book transactions:

A "wrong book" at PBS means a book that does not match its listing in the PBS Database in one or more of the FOUR necessary aspects: ISBN, Title, Author and Booktype.

  • Nothing else about a listing needs to match
  • cover image does not have to match
  • Publisher does not have to match
  • Publication date does not have to match.

If you, on the other hand, "received a book whose title you don't recognize (you did not request any version of this book)" you should not mark it received but contact the sender.

Actually, I received a textbook with the same title, but of a different edition and ISBN than was listed, so in my case I guess I did the right thing. Thanks for clarifying.

Amy, for your situation the action was correct.
