I received my first book today and was disappointed.  I order the hard cover copy and received a paperback.  It normally wouldn't matter to me but I heard that this was a really good book and I was considering keeping it.

When I got the book there was a store sticker over the actual ISBN.  I guess the sender didn't want to bother taking off the sticker.  I took off the sticker and the ISBN didn't match the one that I ordered.  I then thought that maybe there were no hard copies available so the system sent me to someone with a paperback but that is not the case.  I researched it and there are over 200 copies of the hard cover available.

I got the book very quickly so that is a good thing but at the same thing it is not what I wanted and it was listed wrong.

I am new to PBS and am not sure what I should do.  I don't know if there a way to leave feedback for the senders or just to PM them.  I am going to read the book but I don't appreciate the fact that someone couldn't take the time to remove the sticker and enter the correct ISBN so that it would be listed correctly.

I guess my quess my question is....what would you do in my case?

Make sure to mark it RWAP (received with a problem).  You did not receive the book you ordered.  The sender should return your credit.  Welcome to PBS!

You need to mark this book RWAP. When doing so you'll have a box to PM the member. Gently explain to them that the book sent to you was the wrong ISBN. It's up to you whether or not to request that they return your credit.

From the help center:

If a book you requested using credit(s) arrives with an "official" problem, you need to

  • send a Personal Message to the sender either during the process of marking the book received and/or using the PM button on the transaction in your Transaction Archive, as described in How do I contact another member?.

Your PM should be polite but clear.  It should clearly ask for a response, and if you want a credit refund, this information should also be included in the PM.

You should give the sender a week to respond.

We suggest this text: "Thanks for sending the book.  Unfortunately there is a problem [explain the problem here--if this was an unpostable book you can say that the problem "makes this unpostable by site guidelines, and I won't be able to swap the book again"].  I would like a credit refund, which can be accomplished by clicking Give Refund in your transaction archive on the Request Details page for this swap, and I will be happy to mail the book back to you if you will provide postage."

  • If the problem is resolved by the sender, submit that information in follow-up from your transaction archive.
  • If the problem is NOT resolved by the sender (and negotiations are finished), submit that information in follow-up from your transaction archive

Edited to add: Donna beat me to it.

Even if there is a sticker over the ISBN on the back cover, it would be listed on the inside page next to the title page with the other copyright information, so a sticker over the ISBN is no excuse for posting the wrong book. I had that happen recently too, someone posted the book only by the author and title rather than ISBN. Definitely mark it as RWAP and just state in the comment line that neither the ISBN nor the type of book (hardcover ordered, received paperback) match so it was the wrong book sent.

Ok, I checked and the inside ISBN and the one on the back do not match.  What is with that?

Okay, I will admit that I am not the most avid reader in the world so I may be wrong here.  But the cover of this book is thin and very bendable.  Is that considered to be a hard copy book?  Like I said in the the earlier post the ISBN on back and the one inside do not match so I am thinking that maybe it is not the sender's fault completely but IS this a hard copy or not. IMPO it's not.  I thought that hard cover book's had were just that HARD and unbendable.  I am now so confused.

Well that's weird that the inside ISBN and the one on the back are different. Sometimes a publisher will list the ISBN for all versions of the book on that inside page, but in that case there would be more than one listed in there. Hardcover books should not have bendable covers, no. I wonder if that one is a library binding or something? Weird. It doesn't say "advanced reader copy" or something like that on it on the front or back cover, does it?

Now that I look further there are two ISBNs on the inside and they are clearly defined by pbk and hardcover.
