This is first novel of the Legacy trilogy set in England in the Regency era. There are unexpected plot twists, witty dialogue and an truly engaging cast of characters that contribute to the charm of this regency romanace. Catherine Coulter's characters quickly come alive and draw the reader into the story. You will find yourself rooting for the good guys and hissing at the bad guys. This is an entertaining read with interesting and varied characters, historical local color and a well-paced plot. There is a reluckant Earl, an illegitimate Duchess, and three servants who are cocky, smart, good plotters and better friends who don't know the meaning of subservient. There are buckets of intrigue, laughter, and a love story that will keep you turning the pages.

The characters all speak in an odd stilted manner, and the hero keeps treating the heroine like dirt. Then they have sex and get married. That's romantic!

This is the first in a trilogy. I loved this book, and the series (read also the Nightingale Legacy, and the Valentine Legacy). I found all of these to be quite funny at times, and the hero/heroines unique. One of the first Coulter novels I read. I just had to keep the series, and plan to re-read them .

England during the Regency period... two strong characters..an Earl and a Duchess, intertwine their lives and throw in a cast of subservient (really ??) servants and this book brings you love and laughter...

There were quite a few humorous conversations between the two main characters, but I didn't like that they were cousins. That was icky to me.

I love the Legacy books. Catherine Coulter's quirky sense of humor comes alive in the book. The characters leap off the page through the narrators voice and have you laughing out loud. The narrator is excellent.

Unabridged bookcassette. Requires a bookcassette adapter.

historical romance novel...
Unexpected plot twists, witty dialogue and an engaging cast of secondary characters contribute to the charm of a new Regency romance by the author of The Heiress Bride . The Earl of Chase's illegitimate daughter Josephina Cochrain, nicknamed "the Duchess" by her antagonistic cousin Marcus Wyndham because of her precocious self-possession, unexpectedly becomes both legitimate and an heiress upon her father's death.

The Earl of Chase's illegitimate daughter Josephina Cochrain, nicknamed "the Duchess" by her antagonistic cousin Marcus Wyndham because of her precocious self-possession, unexpectedly becomes both legitimate and an heiress upon her father's death. His nephew Marcus receives the title but little else; Josephina inherits most of the money but will lose it all unless she weds her obnoxious cousin. The two protagonists are quite predictable, although Josephina at one point embarks on a course of action completely out of character, but Coulter surrounds them with memorable eccentrics, and the action never slows. Attempted murders, hidden treasure and a special secret of Josephina's known only to her faithful manservant Badger all ensure that this first volume in a planned trilogy creates plenty of situations for subsequent novels to explore.
