I had Fahrenheit 451 in hardcover on my wishlist, and was happy when I just received notice that it had been posted.  I promptly logged in & accepted the book, along with another book the member had.

THEN, I pulled up the detail page, out of curiousity, to see which HC edition this was - I had WL'd several hardcover editions, just to cover all bases.

At the bottom of the detail page, in the member reviews, someone had made the note that this is a trade paperback, NOT a hardcover.   I do not want a paperback edition (already have one) - I specifically want a hardcover only.   But I've already accepted the wish - what can I do?   At this moment, the member has not accepted my request just yet - but I hate to seem rude & cancel the order immediately either.   I did send him a PM asking if it was PB or HC & explaining that I had specifically wishlisted the HC based on the ISBN.

Help!  What should I do?

UPDATE --- I just got a PM from the member who posted the book.  Although the ISBN lists this edition as hardcover, it IS indeed a paperback according to the member.   Thankfully, he was very sweet & understanding, and didn't mind me cancelling the order since it was not the binding I thought it was.  Thanks Cesar!!!   Your kindness & understanding are much appreciated & I'm eager to get the other book I ordered from you.

The note that you're seeing in the member reviews is most likely the type of binding that the person reviewing the book has.  It probably has nothing to do with the binding of the book that you are getting.  When you pulled up the detail page, towards the top of the page, does it show you the ISBN # or book type?  (I don't have any pending orders, so I can't check on my end as to what you should be seeing).   If the ISBN is there, I would copy and paste it into another window and see what binding type comes up.

This particular ISBN says it's the hardcover - but the review is also attached to *this* ISBN.   Confusing, to say the least.   I checked at Amazon & it also shows this ISBN number as being hardcover, so *hopefully* it is - but the review is what puzzled me - it was on *this* edition.

The ISBN in question is:

9780965020596

well, the gentleman that posted his PB on a HC ISBN needs to remove it and post it correctly.  He can't post a PB that way, if that ISBN is associated with HC he needs to post it without an ISBN or he runs the risk if he sends it out of loosing the book and the credit.

Nickie - In the future if someone posts a WL book to you incorrectly, make them cancel the order instead of you doing it. It won't matter so much if you are the only one wishing for it, but if you cancel, it removes it from your WL and you end up at the end of the line. That's not fair to you when he is the one who posted a book incorrectly. As Christy said, he is not allowed to post the book by the ISBN if it is a paperback and the ISBN is labelled as a HC in the PBS system.

Thanks for the advice, everyone!   If this ever happens again, I will be sure to ask to sender to cancel the order rather than me.  I was the only one in line for this specific ISBN anyway, so it didn't "hurt" me there.

I wonder if it's possible that the same ISBN was used for two editions of the book through some fluke?  Before I heard back from the sender, I had rapidly searched online for the ISBN - looked at Amazon and at a bunch of online book dealer sites.   Whenever binding was mentioned, it almost always said hardcover, but one dealer (with this exact same ISBN) did state that his was a trade paperback binding - yet it was this same ISBN!!!.    Strange.....

Anyway, the other member involved was very nice, so I just dropped him another note & mentioned that he might want to re-verify the ISBN on his book, so that this doesn't happen to him again either..

Ah, didn't mean to babble - but thank you again everyone for your advice & tips!!

The same ISBN is used for both paperback and hardcover quite often. That is why PBS is pretty clear in its rules that if you enter an ISBN and the binding (type) doesn't match, you cannot post the book by the ISBN, it must be posted as a non-ISBN book. This is so people can know what they are getting and in situations just like yours, you don't get sent the wrong book when you have WLed a Hardcover book because you want a HC book.

Even if he verifies the ISBN, he still has the book posted wrong if he has a paperback posted by an ISBN that is listed here as a HC. He cannot use that ISBN to post his book here. If he sends it and the receiver reports it RWP and asks for the credit back, he will need to return it and be out postage and the book.
