An extensive guide to all known serial killers ( as of 1997 ) The book features a special appendix probing the mind of spree killer Andrew Cunanan. Great for true crime/serial killer buffs. The book in many places uses conceptual art taken from a line of "serial killer trading cards" which seemed strange/cartoony choice rather than use actual photos of the killers and their work/crime scenes. Also covered are related subjects such as motives/methods/pop culture impact/trivia/pyschological insights...too many to list. Although not overly graphic, it is very disturbing subject matter and is not for the squeamish reader....and certainly not for children and young adults as the book does delve into horrific crimes against children. True crime fans will adore it...but don't stare into this abyss for too long, lest it stare back into you.

I love this book! I have been reading true crime books for years and when I read this, I could not believe the amount of information that I missed or that is not in the other books. Harold Schechter also wrote many others, on of my favorites being "Deranged". The only thing that I would love it if he came up with a more "up to date" version. Great book! Highly recommended for the Serial Killer buffs!

I read alot of true crime books and thought this looked rather interesting. I is more than interesting! I have been reading it like a regular book. There are alot of things I don't know about serial murder and this book breaks it down in easy to read, informative and sometimes terrifying. Books don't really scare me but this book makes you relize how evil people are and have been all through the centurys. It even covers pop culture and interesting facts about many killers that I hadn't even heard of. It trys not to focus on the main stream killers and focus more on lesser known serial killers. I loved it!
