Two hundred years have pasted in Narnia since Prince Rilian's adventures Jill and Eustance, told in the Silver Chair. Now, once again, Narnia is threatened. Near lantern Waste, Shift the Ape discovers a lion's skin. He persuades his gullible henchman, puzzle the donkey, to dress up in the skin. Shift then convinces the Narnians that Aslan, the lion has returned. The spreading of these false rumours puts Narnia at the mercy of the Calormenes and the evil powers of Tash which Shift evokes.
