Book Description:
A moving coming-of-age story set in the 1900's, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows the lives of 11-year-old Francie Nolan, her younger brother Neely, and their parents, Irish immigrants who have settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Johnny Nolan is as loving and fanciful as they come, but he is also often drunk and out of work, unable to find his place in the land of opportunity. His wife Katie scrubs floors to put food on the table and clothes on her childrens' backs, instilling in them the values of being practical and planning ahead.

When Johnny dies, leaving Katie pregnant, Francie, smart, pensive and hoping for something better, cannot believe that life can carry on as before. But with her own determination, and that of her mother behind her, Francie is able to move toward the future of her dreams, completing her education and heading oft to college, always carrying the beloved Brooklyn of her childhood in her heart.

I loved it!!!! The language really takes you back and make you feel like you're living in Brooklyn 100 years ago...she takes you into the lives and struggles of the characters and does an excellent job of creating emotional connections. I would definitely recommend this!

A book that, while telling a sad story, manages to not be depressing. Very touching.

A very real very honest story from the viewpoint of a little girl growing up tough in Brooklyn. Kind of an American female version of Angela's Ashes

This has been around for sixty-six years and I have read it for the first time. I can't believe my ignorance of, truly, one of the great pieces of literature of the Twentieth Century.

Very good book; a contemporary author raised in the same area as where the book takes place; the author has a wonderful sense of place. I highly recommend this book to everyone, including teenagers. My teenage daughter loved the book and when she grew up and married, I gave it to her. Tt is a permanent resident in her bookcase, and has been enjoyed by her teenage daughters. I definitely recommend it.

Moved along a bit too slowly for me. I didn't quite get why it is said to be such a classic.

This book was difficult to get into. I finished it, but it was not a story that really went anywhere.

Captivating and inspiring. I simply could not put this book down. A classic that reads like a friend's story. A must read.

I rate this as one of my all time favorite books. It is such a simple story, but so rich with detail. It is definitely a classic that everyone should enjoy.

very good, interesting, easy read. I'm very glad I read it. But comparisons to Angela's Ashes are pushing it. Angela's Ashes is more sophisticated reading, and Francie Nolan is rich compared to the kids in Angela's Ashes.

One of my all-time favorites. Listening to the audio book (on CDs or cassette tapes) is even better than reading the book by yourself. This book is a treasure!

Fabulous - a book I have put off reading for years and finally got around to it. I have an extra copy for my stepdaughter to read, so this one is free to be enjoyed by someone else.
