Book Description:
People love and remember the novels of Bobbie Ann Mason because they ring so true. This dazzling memoir saga of three generations, their aspirations, their conflicts, and the ties that bound them to one another. Spanning decades, Clear Springs gracefully weaves together the stories of Mason's grandparents, parents, and her won generation. The narrative moves from the sober industriousness of a Kentucky farm to the hippie lifestyle of the countercultural 1960s; from a New York fan magazine to the shock-therapy ward of a mental institution; from a county poorhouse to the set of a Hollywood movie; from a small rustic schoolhouse to glittering pop music concerts. In the process of recounting her own odyssey--the story of a misfit girl who dreamed of distant places--Mason depicts the changes that have come to family, to women, and to heartland America in the twentieth century. Ultimately, Clear Springs is a heartfelt portrait of an extended family, and a profound affirmation of the importance of family love.

A warm and sincere view of a poor Kentucky farm family life through the eyes of a young girl who could not wait to get away from a life that over time kept drawing her back. A wonderful lesson on family bonds and simple family life that has long been lost and can never be recaptured. A beautifully written story that brought back so many memories for this reader, how I long for that simple life again.

I'm surprised to see only three stars by this book, which I absolutely loved. Bobbie Ann Mason is an accomplished writer; CLEAR SPRINGS describes how she reached her award-winning station as one of the nation's best.

Bobbie Ann Mason tells the inter-generational story of the Masons and Lees of the Kentucky farm region. Her recollection of growing up in the 50's and 60's is vivid amd full of details. Her mother is an amazing person that you fell you'd like to have over for Sunday dinner, if her cooking skills didn't intimidate you. Great book!

Bobbie Ann Mason explores her rural past... it reads like a novel.. this is a story of her family history but it could be anyone's story. It is a good read.
