Book Description:

When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West in L. Frank Baum's classic tale, we heard only her side of the story. But what about her arch-nemesis, the mysterious witch? Where did she come from? How did she become so wicked? And what is the true nature of evil?

Gregory Maguire creates a fantasy world so rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again. Wicked is about a land where animals talk and strive to be treated like first-class citizens, Munchkinlanders seek the comfort of middle-class stability and the Tin Man becomes a victim of domestic violence. And then there is the little green-skinned girl named Elphaba, who will grow up to be the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, a smart, prickly and misunderstood creature who challenges all our preconceived notions about the nature of good and evil.

This book was truly awful and a chore to read. A friend said she tried several times over the course of 10 years and finally threw it in the trash. How they made a hit play is beyond me, I'm afraid to see the play now.

Honestly I wasnt that impressed. I love books that try to make you look at things from a different point of view but this book just didnt work for me. It seemed to drag on and on and finally ended and it was almost like I was grateful...

I made the mistake of reading the novel after seeing the musical in Chicago which was amazing. I think that cause me to expect things out of the novel that you can only get from the play, so i was left a little disappointed, but I will go back and read it again sometime just to see if I can understand it more without thinking about how different the play was.

Very different from my normal genre of paranormal romance, but it was really a good book. I liked the unique characters and the world in which they lived. The story was really interesting. The only negative I have is that much of the book uses old world type language & expressions and sometimes I had to re-read a part to understand what it was saying so it took me longer to read than most books. The story is the life and times of the wicked witch of the west from Wizard of Oz fame.

Entirely different from anything I've read. I fell in love with Elphaba. The characters are well written and it's amazing how different they all are. Often when you read a work of fiction it's obvious that all the characters are the creation of one person. There is so much variety, and even the way they speak is different. I absolutely love this book, but don't usually recommend it because it's got some weird sex stuff in it- The kind that makes you feel kinda yucky inside. But the story is amazing and makes you wish when you watch The Wizard of Oz, that Dorothy won't throw that pail of water on the "wicked" witch.

I really loved this book. I am a big reader of fantasy and The Wizard of Oz was one of my favorite movies growing up. You learn why she is green and so 'wicked' and maybe feel a little sorry for her. The story is dark and myesterious but so inventive and amazing - this is one of my all time favorite books.

This is a story with much immagination, but it left me empty and wanting more. I'm glad the Broadway Play leaves out the less-than-desireable parts.

I'm sorry to say that I just couldn't get through it...not even close. It came highly recommended to me, but after a couple chapters it felt like work.

Enjoyable book. Don't take it too seriously, just relax and enjoy the ride.

One of my all-time favorite books! Brilliantly written and immensly imaginative - I love how all of the story lines come together to end up at the scee we all know in The Wizard of Oz.

it's been a year since i read wicked, but i remember i just could not put it down. especially during the first part. it did get a little political, but i was okay with that. i breezed through that part (though it felt very much like required reading at that particular point), because i wanted to get back to elphelba.

her character had be absolutely enthralled. overall, i loved the book and am looking forward to seeing the musical... which, from what i am reading on here is pretty different.

we'll see!

It's dark and not a lot of humor. If you're into angst and foreboding, then this is your book :)

Great spin on an childhood classic. Very in-depth look into the Wicked Witch of the West's mind.

Not a typical fairy tale! I'm not sure what I was expecting of the Wicked Witch's life story, but this was definately not it. Politics, religion, predjudice, and human (& animal) rights are all issues that shaped her life. Was she really "wicked"? The book is slow in parts and I found the language a little difficult, but overall a good read.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I feared the author would do the cliched portrayal of the poor, repressed, teased, "sob story" regarding the Wicked Witch of the West. Another surprise is how the book focused on the politics of the Land of Oz, which I admit was something about which I've always wondered. I can't wait to read the rest of Gregory Maguire's books.
