Book Description:
Paulo Coelho's enchanting novel has inspired a devoted following around the world, and this tenth anniversary edition, with a new introduction from the author, will only increase that following. This story, dazzling in its powerful simplicity and inspiring wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried in the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an alchemist, all of whom point Santiago in the direction of his quest. No one knows what the treasure is, or if Santiago will be able to surmount the obstacles along the way. But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods turns into a discovery of the treasures found within. Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, the story of Santiago is an eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts.

I found this book overly philosophical. Coelho sacrificed what could have been a good story by pushing an agenda of his own philosophy. Although yes, it was cute, and I was genuinely curious about whether or not Santiago would find his treasure, this is not good fiction. If you want to feel good and need inspiration, then this IS a good book for you -- and you'll read through it pretty quickly, too.

This book was pretty good. It seemed to be told in parable style and was a little slow for me.

I found this book to be a little hard to read/follow. It was okay but did not make it to my favorite list.

This fairy tale-philosophical essay shimmers throughout its 167 pages---as one reads he accompanies the boy on the strange and marvelous journey in quest of his dream. I'm very glad to have become acquainted with this gifted Brazilian author.

I know this is a popular book, I didn't get it.

I found this kind of lightweight, a simple parable that hardly makes for a whole book. Not life-changing, but not unpleasant to read.

I have it because it was a bookclub selection in not one, but two clubs I have belonged to over the years. I didn't like it either time I read it but others find it inspiring. Good luck!

A quick read, keeps you interested and can bring a sense of comfort in listening to your heart and pursuing its path. Nothing new or earth shattering, but good.

Well written. It reminded me of The Prophet by Gibram.

Waaaaay over-rated! This book is pure hype and I'm embarrassed I fell for it. The philosophical text used by this author is pure stupidity. I caught myself rolling my eyes more times than none. On a better note, there are like 2 quotes that I liked in all 167 pages...

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book - so much that I picked up several other Coelhos. However, I can't seem to remember what the book was about. My favorites always stick with me.

This book was very light reading and just a feel-gooder. For one who is unsure where they are headed in life, The Alchemist will show you the way. Both inspiring and motivating.

I suggest this book to people all the time. Its one of my favorite books of all time. Its a fable about following your dreams and finding love. I think that the people who dont get it or who say they didnt like it must have a pretty sour outlook on life.
