There are lots of children on Hill Street, but no little girls Betsy's age. So when a new family moves into the house across the street, Betsy hopes they will have a little girl she can play with. Children's literature at its best! Be swept away to a time and place when girls had one "regular" dress and one "good" dress and the city was safe for exploration by three curious, fun-loving girls. This really captures the flavor of growing up middle-class in America in the 1940s.

Book 1 in what is, for my money, the best girls' series of all time. Meet Betsy Ray and Tacy Kelly and their families. The girls are best friends, growing up in turn of the century Minnesota and the series carries the girls and their friends through high school and beyond. EXCELLENT!
