Book Description:
On one level, Davies's novel is "about" four academics: Maria Theotoky, the brilliant, beautiful graduate student; her adviser, the ascetic Dr. Hollier; Simon Darcourt, the bon vivant priest; and Parlabane, once an outstanding scholar, now sycophant to his former classmates. Then there is the basic plot theme: Who will end up with the girl? Standard stuff. Yet the real focus here is on the spiritual and/or mystical personal explorations of the main characters.

First book in his Cornish Trilogy. Davies is arguably the best Canadian writer, and this trilogy is no exception.

This is one in a trilogy, but it could be read on its own. Enjoy!

Simon Darcourt, a goodhearted priest and scholar...Clement Hollier, a professor with a passion for the darker side of medieval psychology...the defrocked monk John Parlabane...Arthur Cornish, a rich young businessman who inherits some troublesome paintings and manuscripts...and Maria Theotoky, the beguiling graduate student who exerts a strange power over all these men. Robertson Davies uses his magical touch to weave together the destinies of this remarkable cast of characters, creating a wise and witty portrait of love, murder, and scholarship at a modern university.
