Book Description:
The editors of this work-one is a teacher, one a writer, and one a women's bookstore owner-clearly love to read, are committed to promoting women's writing, and want to provide a useful guide for readers of similar inclination. The editors, along with some 30 contributors, have written brief descriptions (about 200 words) of 500 selected books. To be included, books had to be written by a woman and be in prose, in print, and in English (or in translation). The editors selected books they personally loved that represent multicultural and international perspectives. The entries are arranged thematically, including sections for art, family, identity, work, and 15 additional themes. The selections are somewhat unexpected, but they do include at least one sampling of the most acclaimed women writers (e.g., Angelou, Morrison, Weldon, and Oates). Recommended for public and academic libraries.

This book has been my most reliable reference ever since it came out, leading me to good books that I wouldn't have otherwise known about. Titiles are organized according to large themes such as: ethics, art, family, wives and lovers, growing old. A paragraph or two gives information about the title.

By going through this book, I found many books that I otherwise never would have known about. I'm excited to be able to start reading these now.
Great reference!

Women are strong writers. This book proves out the struggle and the talent of many women we have heard of and others we haven't.

An articulate and intentionally eclectic reader's guide covering a wide range of novels, narratives, biographies, and more, with more than 500 entries.

What a fun read!!! i did not read this book straight thru. and i made a game to see how many of the 500 books i had read. my result was that i had read at least 1-2 books in each catagory.
the books that sounded good, i looked up and requested them. a fun way to look up books.
