Book Description:
Why is the land so important to Cassie's family? It takes the events of one turbulent year--the year of the night riders and the burnings, the year a white girl humiliates Cassie in public simply because she is black--to show Cassie that having a place of their own is the Logan family's lifeblood. It is the land that gives the Logans their courage and pride, for no matter how others may degrade them, the Logans possess something no one can take away.

This is a great book to read to your kids to explain the nastiness of prejudice and how it can effect those around you.

This book opens eyes to race relations in earlier times. Good for young readers to learn about the past prejudices and great for older readers as well.....to keep their eyes & minds open to prejudices. A keeper!

With the land to hold them together, nothing can tear the Logans apart. Why is the land so important to Cassie's family? An excellent read for adults as well as young readers. I didn't read it when it was published in 1976 thinking that at 22 I was too "adult". Like Harry Potter, though, this is a book that adults can become engrossed in. Cassie Logan is 9 years old in 1933. She lives in the south with her family during a shameful period of our past. She has to deal with extreme bigotry and racism from whites. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, though, she remains strong and proud. This story recounts a particularly strifeful year in the lives of Cassie & her family.
