Book Description:
The Awakening shocked turn-of-the-century readers and reviewers with its treatment of sex and suicide. In a departure from literary convention, Kate Chopin failed to condemn her heroine's desire for an affair with the son of a Louisiana resort owner, whom she meets on vacation. The power of sensuality, the delusion of ecstatic love, and the solitude that accompanies the trappings of middle- and upper-class convention are themes of this now-classic novel.

This book is authored by Kate Chopin and edited by Sandra Gilbert. If you are unfamiliar with Ms. Chopin's work, please take a moment and visit: http://www.vcu.edu/engweb/webtexts/hour/ which contains the complete copy of Chopin's "The Story of an Hour." It is a quite well-known and very short story and it should assist you in determining your interest in her work. Ms. Chopin is known mostly for "The Awakening" as well as "The Story of an Hour." I find her work to be as profound and emotionally surprising as Virginia Woolf. I hope you will enjoy her art.
