ISBN 0307119130 - Childrens' books about holidays are in piles all over my house, so weeding through them, and reviewing them while I'm at it, has turned into quite the fun project. Richard Scarry is always a delight to find in the pile and his pairing with Golden Books is bound to thrill kids.

The animals of Busytown celebrate various holidays and enjoy the seasons. The book starts with May Day in spring, including a dance around the maypole. The Fourth of July is celebrated with a picnic and summer continues with a family summer vacation. When autumn arrives, the Pig family visits a farmstand and, in late November, they prepare for Thanksgiving. Finally, the winter comes, bringing outdoor fun like skating - and Christmas, of course!

The illustrations are standard Scarry Busytown, which fans will enjoy. The holidays are few, something I thought the title was vaguely misleading about - I was expecting more and hoping for more detail. The Fourth of July, for example, is all about a picnic, lacking any explanation as to what the holiday is about. The same is true for the other holidays that are included. Still, as an introduction to the seasons and some of the holidays, this is a cute, quick read that can be used as a starting point for parents to share their own family's traditions with their children.
