Book Description:
The writer with a claim to being the world’s foremost literary escape artist is back, with an intoxicating novel about the business and pleasure of wine, set in his beloved Provence.

Max Skinner has recently lost his job at a London financial firm and just as recently learned that he has inherited his late uncle’s vineyard in Provence. On arrival he finds the climate delicious, the food even better, and two of the locals ravishing. Unfortunately, the wine produced on his new property is swill. Why then are so many people interested in it? Enter a beguiling Californian who knows more about wine than Max does–and may have a better claim to the estate. Fizzy with intrigue, bursting with local color and savor, A Good Year is Mayle at his most entertaining.

Lighthearted and pleasurable to read, this is a book to take on vacation or to relax with before bed. The characters are people you would like to spend more time with and I found myself reluctant to leave them at the end of the book.

You know once you get over the idea of Russell Crowe playing the lead in the movie and get a bit more realistic then this book is real good. No, it's not that I don't appreciate Russell Crowe and no I didn't see the movie version (why would you when you have this great book?). Good, light read (don't take it literally) for a summer or weekend read.

Down and out financier hits the motherload; property in France, a winery, and a couple of cute girls, too! Just a slight hint of intrigue and fairly likeable characters makes me wish I'd inherited a winery too!

Better than the movie but kind of slow. Great if you want to learn about wine

This is one of the most fun books I've read in a long time. I love Peter Mayle and this book is one of his best! You will enjoy this book from beginning to end. It's a great entertaining read. The characters are wonderfully developed and you'll feel like you know them personally. This book is a perfect read for vacation... Or if you feel like you need a vacation... You'll be transported to Provence!

I bought a copy of this book for my dad, and he loved it too. I gave my copy to a friend who also enjoyed it.

Easy read and a fun story. Travel with Max from rainy England to sunny Provence. Much better then the movie, but then again most books are.
