Book Description:
Howard Norman's The Bird Artist, the first book of his Canadian trilogy, begins in 1911. Its narrator, Fabian Vas is a bird artist: He draws and paints the birds of Witless Bay, his remote Newfoundland coastal village home. In the first paragraph of his tale Fabian reveals that he has murdered the village lighthouse keeper, Botho August. Later, he confesses who and what drove him to his crime--a measured, profoundly engrossing story of passion, betrayal, guilt, and redemption between men and women.

This is a good, quick read. Not life-changing, heart wrenching, or bust- a- gut- laughing but still a solid, interesting book that you can finish on a plane ride, for example.

Simply wonderful writing. The characters are so fully drawn - the sense of time and place so detailed. I didn't want it to end.

A beautiful and haunting story, written in sparse prose; reads like old fashioned literature. I liked this book very much. Takes place in Nova Scotia around turn-of-the-century (last one that is!) and gives you a real flavor of small town island life. A joy and refreshingly different.

"The Bird Artist is a comfortable, pleasing read, with a satisfying ending and enough of a plot twist to propel the reader through the second half of the book with renewed relish.

While it may seem as though the author has given away the plot with the initial paragraph, this is certainly not the case. Norman skillfully balances tragedy and redemption to deliver a solid novel with just enough Newfoundland flair to satisfy but not detract from the robust characters, natural dialogue, and subtle imagery.
