Book Description:
With The Last Dragonlord, Joanne Bertin explodes onto the fantasy scene. Told with astounding depth of character and a true gift for dialogue, this tale of love, loss, and high adventure heralds Joanne Bertin's arrival as a young master of the field.

Dragonlord Linden Rathan is the last-born of a race of immortal were-dragons. He has spent six hundred years alone, searching endlessly for his soultwin while his fellow Dragonlords sit deep in their mountain keep at the crown of the world, watching over humanity's Five Kingdoms.

When the Queen of Cassori dies under mysterious circumstances, Linden and the other Dragonlords are drawn once again into mortal affairs, this time to prevent civil war as two claimants vie for the regency.

This seemingly simple task is quickly complicated by the machinations of the Fellowship, a secret society of true-humans long though dead--the return of which is steeped in a dark and terrible conspiracy to usurp the throne.

As the battle for the rule of Cassori escalates, Linden finds himself drawn deep into the dark plans of the Fellowship, which holds the power to ultimately destroy his immortal life.

But hope arrives in the form of a beautiful young ship captain named Maurynna. Dark of hair and fiery of spirit, she may be the only one who can help Linden bring Cassori back from the brink of chaos--and may be his last chance for happiness, unless the Fellowship gets to her first....

This is a wonderful story! It took a little while to build up, but once it did I was totally hooked. Great characters, lots of plot, romance and a neat take on dragons. Highly recommended, as is the sequel! I really wish Joanne Bertin would write more books!

I like Joanne Bertin alot because she presents great fantasy in every page and a nice romance element in the character Linden Rathan who seeks his soultwin. Now, who can resist that? What a fun read with lots of detailed dialogue.

This book is really great! The characters are full. This story has light, dark, a little sad, funny, romance and good dragons (not the destroy the city variety.) I really wish she would write the third one she promised at the end of Dragon and Phoenix. I would buy it hardcover in a heartbeat.

There is a short story by this author as well with some of the same characters. She used to send you a copy for $5 if you asked from her website. Last time I checked however she had stopped for a time.

Dragon and Phoenix is the second story. The books can be read in either order, but it will be more fun (and more surprises) if you read them in order. This one then Dragon and Phoenix.
