Book Description:
Dixie Hemingway knows first-hand that many things in life are worse than a dirty litter box. Once happy as a Florida sheriff's deputy, she lost everything when senseless tragedy shattered her world. Now Dixie laces up her sneakers, grabs some kitty treats, and copes with one day at a time as a pet-sitter. Her investigations deal strictly with "crimes" such as who peed on the bed... until she finds a dead man face down in an Abyssinian's water bowl. With the local cops stymied -- including a handsome detective who catches her eye -- she decides to clip a leash on a lead or two and go sleuthing herself. Dixie soon finds out that the Abyssinian's pretty owner has vanished and left behind a shocking past, a lonely cat, and a chilling reason for Dixie to start running when she's out walking the dogs.

The Publishers Weekly blurb on the back called it a cozy. I would definitely NOT call it a cozy.

I really like the book. Kept me guessing along with Dixie. I gave it FOUR stars and look forward to reading more in the series. (when my current TBR shrinks a bit)

Much better than I thought it would be - I thought it would be a fluffy little light read, but there was a lot more to it than that - characters were well-drawn and interesting, lots of action and tidbits about animals.

This looks like her first book. Great characters, good story well told. As a cat lover and former pet sitter, I really got into this one. Not quite a thriller, but not quite a cozy read either. I hated to put it down. If you like animals, you will probably like this.

An OK read. The plot starts out alright, and is very promising, but the ending is not credible. I did not really like the heroine. The characters showed some promising features, but were not well fleshed out.

Former deputy sheriff and (due to the trauma of losing her husband and child) now pet sitter Dixie finds a dead man in one of her clients' house. Her client cannot be contacted. Dixie puts her former training to use and discovers all kinds of secrets (some of these story lines, if persued, would have made a better story imo) about her client's past.

It's an engaging story, but the book should have been either shorter or longer.

A nice cozy - headstrong ex-cop heroine who now runs a pet sitting business. This is not brain drain material but rather a good airplane or day at the beach read. In this, the first of a new series, Dixie finds a dead man face down in a cat's water bowl. With the local cops at a loss, including the handsome detective who catches her eye - she decides to clip a leash on a lead or two and go sleuthing herself.

Zany mystery staring a former sheriff's deputy turned pet sitter. Very people oriented.

Fantastic!
I read the whole thing in one great gulping read.
This is a great new series!
Dixie Hemingway starts out with you wondering what happened..and by the end of the book she's your new best friend..or one you would like to have.
Was a twist I never saw coming in the book..and if you don't get tears while reading parts....
This writer has it all..can't wait for the next books!

Solid writing and a good story line made this book a pleasure to read overall. Look forward to reading more of the series. Four stars is about right.

Really enjoyed this book. A little more depth than a cozy; characters are well developed and likable: I find myself looking forward to seeing how Dixie will grow in the next book. Plot was well developed; writing was good although some of the foul language wasn't needed (not a lot of foul language) : I'm looking forward to the next book. Going to keep this one for a while; read it again; it may actually make it to my keeper shelf.

This is a great start to a series about a pet-sitter. You get a chance to meet a bunch of fun characters in the Keys, Florida. Dixie has had many things happen in her life, but things are finally coming together for her. It's a fun read!

I enjoyed this new series and new author. Glad to know there are more books to enjoy in the series. Kept my interest (I didn't cheat and read the last few pages) and although I kind knew who-dun-it there was a nice little twist at the end :)

This book had a decent & at time page-turning plot. Though there were a few obvious mistakes that Dixie Hemingway (if a real seasoned ex-investigator/police woman as written) wouldn't have made(like feeding a cat before she called 911 after finding a dead body, allowing the cat to sully the crime scene). It was a very fast moving & easy read. The ending & some of the plot were a bit far fetched, as other reviewers have mentioned.

The thing I didn't like about this book is in one chapter the main character is bad mouthing friends who told her that her husband and daughter were, "with Jesus" after they died.?! The author at times seems to have some bigotry towards Christians. Also, if you're conservative about foul language & sexual preferences you might be offended. So, even tho I liked the pet sitter aspect of the book I wouldn't read another of the series.
