Book Description:
At Cafe Heaven, the souffles don't fall, but the bodies do.

Heaven Lee is sassy, brassy, and street-smart. She's also one of Kansas City's premier caterers. With a string of failed careers and stalled marriages behind her, Heaven's finally found her true love -- Cafe Heaven, a trendy restaurant on midtown 39th.

Open-mike night at Cafe Heaven gets pretty hairy, but Heaven is shocked when lovely lawyer Tasha Arnold drops dead from poisoning mid-dinner. With the law and word-of-mouth threatening to close her down, Heaven does what any chef worth her salt would--she turns sleuth.

But asking questions on a mean street like 39th gets Heaven into hot water. Somewhere out there is a killer who would turn Kansas City's favorite caterer into Kansas City's freshest corpse!

Featuring original recipes for such tempting treats as risotto with mushrooms and asparagus, gingerbread upside-down cake and pumpkin piccadillo.

I am sorry to say that this book did not pass my 50 page test. Based on the language factor alone, I would definately not call this book a cozy mystery. I had read her other series starter "The Spice Box" and was expecting the same excellent writing. I was disappointed. Didn't find anything about this book I liked, the setting, the main character, the other characters, etc.

Heaven Lee is not my cup of tea.

First in the culinary mystery series featuring restaurateur and caterer Heaven Lee, in which a woman is poisoned in her restaurant. That she was seen throwing a glass of wine on the woman and that she was there with Heaven’s second ex-husband probably didn’t do anything to remove suspicion from Heaven. When she finds her business threatened and her integrity in question, Heaven feels compelled to clear her name. A quick, easy read; the only downfall was the author’s need to tell the history of every character and also the switching back and forth from the point of view of different characters. IMO, that mostly just distracts from the story. I did enjoy the recipes included (even copied a couple of them down) but I wish they’d have been at the end of the book rather than slapped right in the middle of the story.

Will probably not read author again. Not very well written, nor that suspenseful.
