This book is a fast-paced thrill ride from the opening chapter. The protagonist, Shane Schofield, USMC, blends the personalities and skills of Indiana Jones, James Bond, and John McClane from "Die Hard" into one appealing character whose implausible escapes from death make up the bulk of the story's plot. He and his team have been ordered to secure an Antarctic research station, unaware that a global conspiracy is underway to prevent their success.
The book doesn't pretend to be a guide to the USMC, its weapons, the Antarctic or its inhabitants (killer whales generally don't feed on humans), or even globalization. It's just a fun, easy read for those who like action adventure novels. This book contains more detail than the past two novels I've read (7 Deadly Wonders, 6 Sacred Stones) and Schofield appears in a couple of Reilly's other early works (Area 7, Scarecrow).

Antarcitica is the last unconquered continent, a murderous expanse fo howling winds, blinding whiteouts and deadly crevasses. On the edge of Antarctica is Wilkes Station. Beneath Wilkes Station is the gate to hell itself....IN THE COLDEST PLACE ON EARTH... A team of US divers, exploring three thousand feet beneath the ice shelf, has vanished. Sending out an SOS. Wilkes draws a rapid deployment team of Marines, and someone else...THE HEAT IS ON... First comes a horrific firefight. Then comes a ;punge into a drowning pool filled with killer whales. next comes the hard part,as a handful of survuvors begin and electrifying, red-hot , non-stop of survival across the continent and against wace after wave of elite military assassins--who've all come for one thing: a secret buried deep beneath the ice......... ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ

This is an exciting book. Love the author, will have to get all of his books.
This is a very exciting book--the action never stops! The only part I found kind of boring is there are a LOT of descriptions of military stuff--ranks and weapons. I kind of skipped over those parts, but I enjoyed the story a lot.
Intense action. Slightly futuristic take on a secret battle between the elite forces of three nations over what may be a discovery of alien technology in the Antarctic. A fun read.
Excellent action story. Great read.
