Book Description:
This was the summer he discovered what he wanted--at a gruesome museum of criminology far off the beaten track of more timid tourists. Visions of torture inspired his fantasies like a muse. It would prove so terribly fulfilling.

The bodies of four men have been discovered in the town of Bradfield. Enlisted to investigate is criminal psychologist Tony Hill. Even for a seasoned professional, the series of mutilation sex murders is unlike anything he's encountered before. But profiling the psychopath is not beyond him. Hill's own past has made him the perfect man to comprehend the killer's motives. It's also made him the perfect victim.

A game has begun for the hunter and the hunted. But as Hill confronts his own hidden demons, he must also come face-to-face with an evil so profound he may not have the courage--or the power--to stop it...

Not a bad book but I didn't finish it. I couldn't get into it. There was something about the characters that made me not care about them and therefore I didn't care about how the ending played out.

I was a big fan of the now cancelled British series "Wire in the Blood", and so I decided to try the book series to get my Tony Hill fix. This novel certainly did NOT fail...I got Tony and so much more. McDermid did a thorough, excellent job with the psychological and investigative aspects of the novel. She got into a killer's head and made me squirm, which is something I normally object to but when it's this well written then I generally do not mind. If you don't enjoy gritty crime novels, which I would normally put myself in that category, then this novel isn't for you. However, since I am so enamored with character Tony Hill, I loved this novel and want to continue the series.

I love British humor and british television. Now I have to add I love British mysteries. I watched the series that sprang from this book on the BBCA. Really great stuff so I knew that the books would be better.

I was right. Tony Hill is an extremely engaging character. I cannot say that I see myself in him like I do other books but I am always interested in how his mind turns and what he will do next. He is not the atypical American profiler with the poor beleagured family. He has an entirely different reason for being fascinated with the criminally deranged and simply fractured mind. And let me tell you it's a really interesting reason. I seriously don't think i've ever seen any other man say that in print. Not someone who was the lead character of the novel.

The mystery within is gruesome. Some of the stuff depicted I flinched at. It's grisly and gripping.

This book is well worth the read if you like anything remotely close to this genre. I am currently making my way through the entire series. And so far it only gets better!
