Book Description:
It was a winter morning in 1978, that the body of a young barmaid was discovered in the snow banks of a Scottish cemetery. The only suspects in her brutal murder were the four young men who found her: Alex Gilbey and his three best friends. With no evidence but her blood
on their hands, no one was ever charged.

Twenty five years later, the Cold Case file on Rosie Duff has been reopened. For Alex and his friends, the investigation has also opened old wounds, haunting memories-and new fears. For a stranger has emerged from the shadows with his own ideas about justice. And revenge.

When two of Alex's friends die under suspicious circumstances, Alex knows that he and his innocent family are the next targets. And there's only way to save them: return to the cold-blooded past and uncover the startling truth about the murder. For there lies the identity of an avenging killer...

This was not as good as A Place of Execution, but that's one of the best mystery novels I have ever read, so I'm not complaining! McDermid is great at creating memorable, flawed, surprising characters.

The murder of a young barmaid is not solved for more than 25 years;
the devastating effect this has on 4 young men is the core of the story.

An absorbing thriller about four young men who discover the body of a young barmaid in the snow banks of a Scottish cemetery. The unsolved crime resurfaces twenty-five years later. One of McDermid's
better books--almost as good as A Place of Execution.

Val McDermid is one of the best mysterious/thriller writers in the business. This one is no exception to all of her others. It's a suspense building, pschycological thriller of a book. The ending takes you by surprise even though you may think you've got it figured out beforehand. Once you've read a McDermid book, you're hooked. Just as I was.
