Book Description:
England, 1815: Ian Rufford was captured, enslaved, and then abandoned in the lonely dunes of Egypt's desert. His tormentor was a woman of magnificent beauty...and the blackest of souls. Now, Ian prays for a death that will not come. Only after his rescue does he begin to realize how he has changed. But he understands very little. Just that he is carrying something strange in his blood known only as "The Companion."

Elizabeth Rochewell's home was Egypt. After her father's death, however, she is being sent home to live a conventional life in London. On board ship, she finds herself drawn to her mysterious traveling companion, Ian Rufford. He awakens feelings in her that disturb and tantalize her senses. But he hides a shocking secret that Beth can only begin to unravel.

Now, journey with two linked souls who are determined to stop one woman's evil quest. A journey that will take them to the heights of desire and the depths of depravity. THE COMPANION is an unforgettable, sensual, and erotic novel that take you places you've never gone before...and it will make you believe in the power of true love.

Yet another twist on what makes a human a vampire Squires creates Ian, a human made vamp and left to die by the woman he hates above everyone else. Elizabeth, reluctantly returning to England from Egypt, meets Ian and from old writings deduces most of Ian's secrets. Strangely she sees good in him and cannot fear him. Can Ian and Elizabeth find a cure for Ian's condition...and does he want to when the Companion in his blood may be the only thing which can protect them from his tormentor. A stand alone story with character ties to other of her books.

A bit slow at times. The language is a little technical for me (I don't know the parts of a large ship, or types). But overall a pleasant read. And a very appealing vampire.

It took me a while to get into the story and I do like paranormal and and regency romances separately. About half way through (when they get off the boat) I finally started to enjoy it more probably because they were finally in England which is what I equate with a 'regency'. The writing is very atmospheric and detailed. Sometimes a bit too detailed. I enjoyed the last half of the story very much. Good characters and though it's part of a series, it's definately a stand alone book.

Darker story than I like. It's depressing in places.

A hot 10 rating! One of the best vampire novels out this year. The other novels are: Beyond the Pale by Savannah Russe, and Dark Lover by ? Ward. Great books
