Book Description:
An international literary sensation. First published in Australia, FRANGIPANI has already been licensed in Canada, Holland, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the US. The debut of an entrancing new storyteller, Vaite seasons her tale with charming bits of Tahitian tradition and folk wisdom. A heroine you'll wish was your best friend. Her name is Materena Mahi, and she's the best listener in Tahiti. In Tahiti it's a well-known fact that women are wisest and mothers know best. But it's Materena Mahi who really knows best of all. Everyone--everyone except Materena's daughter, that is--seems to think so. Materena starts her new job as a professional cleaner at the same time she becomes the mother of her beautiful baby girl. Leilani is a challenge almost from the start, posing questions ("Why doesn't it snow in Tahiti?") that seem to Materena not worth wondering about. Soon enough, mother and daughter are engaged in a tug-of-war that tests the bonds of their mutual love. Materena is determined her girl will grow to be a smart, considerate, take-no-nonsense young woman. But when Leilani meets Hotu, a handsome boy and a heartbreaker for sure, Materena must figure out what's best for her daughter--and for herself.

Very interesting fiction - gives one some insight into the everyday life of Tahitians in a humorous way. Written by a Tahitian woman.

Excellent story about relationships especially mother-daughter. Set in Tahiti and the cultural background and life in the South Pacific add a certain delightful feel to the story. I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to reading more about Materena Mahi and her family and culture. I highly recommend this book. A fast, entertaining read.

A very summery kind of book - or maybe a book for the winter, when you WISH it was summer! Set in Tahiti, engaging characters and a glimpse into authentic native life. A book about women, mothers & daughters and friends, all in an island setting.

The author carries us to a place and culture where we want to linger. She creates an authentic voice in Materena and it is fun to get to know her and her Tahitian point of view.

An engaging and honest telling of the relationships between mother and daughter - and a glimpse into the unique culture of Tahiti, a melange of old-world wisdom and modern attitudes. You'll enjoy it!

Despite a difference in cultures, proves the mother-daughter relationship is always the same...

Very cool story about a woman in Tahiti. It's so true-to-life...I should know, because I lived in the South Pacific for three years, and the conversations and attitudes in this book are SO accurate!

Quote from cover: "Vaite's work celebrates the vibrant fullness and humor of daily life in Tahiti and reflects her tremendous respect for the strength of the local women."

A charming read; a glimpse of life in matriarchal Tahiti; a loving look at the relationship of mother and daughter, surrounded by a very large extended family.
