The first in an amazing (and amazingly long) series, Stasheff sets the stage remarkably with fascinating characters and storyline. A thoroughly engrossing and enjoyable read, I can't wait to get to book 2 (and beyond!)

I read this years ago and loved it. I still have my copy, not in the greatest shape. And I did read others that came after but they weren't as good as this first one. I do like these fantasy's that just don't take themselves so deadly serious. A good read.

This book was just okay for me, and I probably won't be seeking out any more books in the series. I thought the beginning was too rushed when Matt was thrown into the alternate world and I didn't feel the plot was original enough. On the flipside, I thought the author did a great job of portraying Matt as a wizard because he had the intellect and personality for it, however he could have grown more confident than he actually did for the duration of the book. I did grow a little tired of how unsure Matt's character was, and for that, I couldn't really grow to like him or relate to him too much.

I have come to find that humorous fantasy books aren't really my cup of tea, however this book did keep me rather entertained (plus I love dragons)!

From back of book:

WANTED: A SUPERWIZARD!

Matt didn't know the scrap of parchment was a trap. So he read the runes - and found himself on a world where reciting verses worked magic.
His first effort got him locked in a dungeon by the evil sorceror Malingo.
Trying for light, he brought forth a fire-breathing, drunken dragon, using poetry lifted from Shakespeare.
And because she was young and beautiful, he swore to serve as her wizard. Then he learned his job as a wizard was to fix it so the three of them could overcome all the dark magic and armies of Malingo!
The addition to the party of a lust witch and a priest who became a werewolf now and then didn't seem much help. Matt figured he had got himself into quite a predicament.
For once, he was right!
