Christopher Tolkien finished up many of his father's, J.R.R. Tolkien's, works-in-progress; lost versions, variant forms, background material to existing stories, and excerpts that were cut from some stories before publication. These are 'unfinished tales,' fifty years of Tolkien.

There are some chapters that have a story in addition to the notes, but it is mostly written from Tolkien's notes on vaious historical background subjects. For example, the history of Galadriel and Celeborn.
