If you want to learn more about J.R.R Tolkien's Middle-Earth then this book and its companion (The Book of Lost Tales, Part Two) are for you. This isn't so much a story per se as Tolkien's notes and drafts.

The Book of Lost Tales stands at the beginning of the entire concepton of Middle-earth and Valinor, for the Tales were the first form of the myths and legends that came to be called The Silmarillion.

Excellent book on the history of Middle Earth. A showing of Tolkien's genius in the creation of this world and it's epic heroes.
