Book Description:
When the Maude Idris docks at the Pool of London, laden with ebony, spices and first-grade tusks of ivory collected from her voyage to Zanzibar, Clement Louvain leaves four armed seamen on board to guard the precious cargo.

But as soon as the relief for the night watch arrives ready for duty in the morning, he finds the ivory gone and one of the seamen dead. Hindered by his ignorance of the river and its customs, and ashamed of the fact that he so badly requires the huge fees that Louvain is prepared to pay, William Monk nevertheless begins his investigation into the theft and murder.

Meanwhile Hester's work at the refuge at Portpool Lane is encountering acute financial difficulties. Sick prostitutes are arriving daily and the medicines needed to help them are running out. When a man arrives promising to pay a huge amount of money for the care of one particular woman, Hester is astonished to meet him. He is none other than Clement Louvain. So who is the woman he is so generously helping? And why is he offering such a substantial sum? Will Monk discover what Louvain is hiding before it is too late?

Written about a London detective turned private enquirer in the late 1800's. Deftly written and you learn about that area of the world without even knowing you are.

Another good Monk-Hester book. I had real trouble putting it down!

Anne Perry is one of my favorite authors. It is an engrossing story. This William Monk adventure finds him in an unfamiliar and dangerous territory. Both William and Hester are locked in very dangerous situations that are interdependent and connected. The reader is given all the tools to solve this mystery but not until William finally stumbles on the truth can you put all the clues together. This was a more complex tale than most.

William Monk accepts an assignment from a shipping magnate to recover stolen goods. Lots of twists and turns. Starts slow, but becomes very interesting.

I thought this was one of the better books in the Monk/Hester series.

I gave this book five stars. Not only is it classic, excellent Anne Perry, the ending bordered on horror and haunted me for some time. Brilliantly done!

Probably the 131th or 14th in the series, DO NOT READ until you have read the others, in order! One of my favorite detective series, excellent representations of the class conscious society of the Victorians. Read the books in this order:
The Face of a Stranger
A Dangerous Mourning
Defend and Betray
A Sudden, Fearful Death
The Sins of the Wolf
Cain His Brother
Weighed in the Balance
The silent Cry
A Breach of Promise
The Twisted root
Slaves of Obsession
Funeral in Blue
Death of a Stranger
The Shifting Tide
The Dark Assassin
