Book Description:
He saw her across the Piazza San Marco and fell in love from afar. When he sees her again in a Venice café a year later, he knows it is fate. He knows little English; and she, a divorced American chef, speaks only food-based Italian. Marlena thinks she is incapable of intimacy, that her heart has lost its capacity for romantic love. But within months of their first meeting, she has packed up her house in St. Louis to marry Fernando—“the stranger,” as she calls him—and live in that achingly lovely city in which they met.

Vibrant but vaguely baffled by this bold move, Marlena is overwhelmed by the sheer foreignness of her new home, its rituals and customs. But there are delicious moments when Venice opens up its arms to Marlena. She cooks an American feast of Mississippi caviar, cornbread, and fried onions for the locals . . . and takes the tango she learned in the Poughkeepsie middle school gym to a candlelit trattoría near the Rialto Bridge. All the while, she and Fernando, two disparate souls, build an extraordinary life of passion and possibility.

Featuring Marlena's own incredible recipes, A Thousand Days in Venice is the enchanting true story of a woman who opens her heart—and falls in love with both a man and a city.

I generally don't read romance, and found this book boring. The writing is lovely but I found the characters dull and forgettable. I slogged through the first 100 pages before tossing it aside.

Sorry, I'm not re-posting this! After spending two days in Venice on a tour, being very intrigued, but not sure if there was enough to do to justify a longer stay, this book makes me want to move there! Incredibly romantic true story, with recipes and (the reason I'm keeping it) a list of things to do in Venice not found in any guide book. Highly recommended, but you'll have to get it from someone else!

I enjoyed it enough to want to read her following ones. She does write a bit too "poetically" - hard to read at times due to my eyes rolling...

I enjoyed this book, seemed unrealistic at times, but I guess their lives are really romantic and dramatic at times. I liked the author's attention to detail, explaining the food, aromas, atmosphere, people, sights, etc of Venice. I want to go there, that is why I read this book.

I found this book lacking something for me. I like the whole, under the tuscan sun storyline but the pace of the book didn't match the excitement for the change that this person was undertaking. I couldn't finish it.

What a fabulous book! I lived just 45 minutes from Venice for four years. All of the places mentioned in this book are real, and the descriptions put you right there on the Grand Canal.
