Book Description:
Deep in the Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest, nearly one million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. Even in this modern age, much of it remains undiscovered and uncharted. From the heart of this old forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she can give no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past. . . . Until recently, Dr. Julia Cates was one of the preeminent child psychiatrists in the country, but a scandal shattered her confidence, ruined her career, and made her a media target. When she gets a desperate call from her estranged sister, Ellie, a police chief in their small western Washington hometown, she jumps at the chance to escape. In Rain Valley, nothing much ever happens - until a girl emerges from the deep woods and walks into town. She is a victim unlike any Julia has ever seen: a child locked in a world of unimaginable fear and isolation. When word spreads of the "wild child" and the infamous doctor who is treating her, the media descend on Julia and once again her competence is challenged. State and federal authorities want to lock the girl away in an institution until an identification can be made. But to Julia, who has come to doubt her own ability, nothing is more important than saving the girl she now calls Alice. To heal this child, Julia will have to understand that she cannot work alone and must look to others: the people in the town she left long ago, the sister she barely knows, and Dr. Max Cerrasin, a handsome, private man with secrets of his own. Then a shocking revelation forces Julia to risk everything to discover the truth about Alice. The ordeal that follows will test the limits of Julia's faith, forgiveness, and love, as she struggles to ascertain where Alice ultimately belongs. In her most ambitious novel to date, Kristin Hannah delivers an incandescent story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope, and the mysterious places in the heart where love lies waiting.

I LOVED this book. It was fascinating, engrossing, and uplifting because the author made me care about the characters. Even though I cried several times I was happy with the ending. This book is unforgettable!!!

A mysterious child who cannot or will not speak has turned up in the center of town, high in a tree and clutching a wolf cub to her chest. She is a very rare case, a feral child, raised in the wild by wolves and no one knows what to do or how to find her family. Julie Cates is a child psychiatrist works to bring her into a civilized world.
The author pulls you into Alice and Julie's struggles from the beginning and it is one of the most heart wrenching and powerful books that I have read. You become emotional tied to the character and feel their triumphs as well as thier failures and setbacks.

I could not put this book down once I started it. It's a story of a little girl who is essentially feral, her search for help when she realizes she needs it, and the woman who helps her learn to fit into society. The patience and love exhibited in this story are heartwarming and the strength of both the little girl and her therapist is inspiring.

I loved this book & couldn't put it down. Fascinating story of a girl found in a small town seemingly from no where. Without giving to much away, it's very interesting to discover her story & how it unfolds. Very heartwarming.

I have loved everything I have ever read by Kristin Hannah but this one was, by far, my favorite one yet! A wonderful story about a little girl who wanders out of the woods and the child psychiatrist who helps bring her out of her shell. LOVED this one and hated for it to end!

I loved this book! I was hooked from the first page, only put it down to go to work, cried at the end, and was sorry when it ended.

Marvelous characters that you really care about, an unusual but totally believable story and wonderful ending.

Highly recommend this -- you'll love it.

I really liked this book. The main story about the girl coming out of the woods is a little much (in my opinion), but the way the author wrote the story in the end it seemed believable. I really enjoyed the characters and the author's style of writing. I will read more of her books.

This was a great book. A pyschiatrist who just lost a patient to suicide is called to her hometown to help a young child who has been living wild in the woods. She has to try and find out how the child came to be in the woods, teach the child about the world, how to trust, how to love, and try to regain her own reputation back in the process.
