Chapter One: Mariel Evans cruised her car smoothly down the ramp from the interstate highway and peered anxiously at her surroundings.
There was no gas station in sight on this December afternoon two days before Christmas. And an ice storm was approaching from the west, with sleet and freezing rain already falling steadily.
A glance at the gauge reminded Mariel that the gas tank was almost empty, and she knew it would be foolish to attempt to reach the next exit.
