Book Description:
Return to a World of Magic and Mystery in this captivating sequel to "The Forest Lord."

Enchanted blood flows through Donal Fleming's veins, inherited from an otherworldly father. His empathic ability for all creatures gives purpose to his calling as a veterinarian, but life among his mother's mortal kind has left him wary, and he secretly longs for the freedom to live unrestrained by civilized society. Until Cordelia...

Cordelia Hardcastle has always played by society's rules, confined in a gilded cage of propriety and convention. Until Donal Fleming introduces her to a passion she's never dreamed of, and a world she's never imagined.

But Donal's attraction to the remarkable Cordelia has unleashed his most primal instincts. The time has come for him to challenge his destiny and face the consequences of his impossible choice -- between human love and the powers that, to him, are life itself...

What a lovely story....that's because the two main characters, Donal Fleming and Cordelia Hardcastle are two loveable characters. Donal, the main character, has inherited enchanted blood from his otherworldly father. Donal is a veterinarian who has the special gift of talking back and forth to any species of animal. Since I'm an animal lover, I was very pleased with this story. But, with humans, Donal is quite wary.

He meets another animal lover, the very human Cordelia Harcastle, while trying to stop an escaped, rampaging animal. Cordelia bravely, but foolishly tries to stop the elephant by standing right in its path. Donal comes along before the elephant can run over her, runs along with the elephant and is able to stop it.

Donal is attracted to Cordelia but if he marries her he'll lose his gift with the animals, something he's not willing to do. He gets invited by Cordelia to her estate to inspect her menagerie of exotic animals to find out what is making them so listless. He starts feeling closer to her but gets more and more conflicted as time goes on. There are also 2 other characters creating mischief in both Donal's and Cordelia's lives; enough so that Donal feels he has to leave the estate.

But it ends happily for all concerned despite misunderstandings and devious plans from others. I love British characters in books; they're so unique. These two are not only unique but despite their individual faults and shortsightedness, they're loveable. A very sweet book overall and I definitely recommend it.

Half fay, half mortal...trying hard to fit in the mortal world and hide their gifts from others. One understanding their heritage, one not. Add love and jealousy to the mix and watch what happens. I personally prefer her "wolf" series, but still this is worth the time to read.
