In his triumphant fictional debut, Stephen Carter combines a large-scale, riveting novel of suspense with the saga of a unique family. The Emperor of Ocean Park is set in two privileged worlds: the upper crust African American society of the Eastern seabordfamilies who summer at Marthas Vineyardand the inner circle of an Ivy League law school. Talcott Garland is a successful law professor, devoted father, and husband of a beautiful and ambitious woman, whose future desires may threaten the family he holds so dear. When Talcotts father, Judge Oliver Garland, a disgraced former Supreme Court nominee, is found dead under suspicioius circumstances, Talcott wonders if he may have been murdered. Guided by the elements of a mysterious puzzle that his father left, Talcott must risk his marriage, his career and even his life in his quest for justice. Superbly written and filled with memorable characters, The Emperor of Ocean Park is both a stunning literary achievement and a grand literary entertainment.

This was at heart a very good story/mystery but the style of writing was sometimes hard to get through.

Very well-told story, good character development, interesting throughout, complex without being difficult to understand or follow. A good read. And, an interesting portrayal of the black middle class. Recommended strongly.

About 200 pages too long. The story itself was very interesting but took forever to get to the exciting ending.

A little wordy, but a good read. For anyone who has spent time at Ivy League colleges the setting and environment will be very familiar.

I wasn't sure that I would like it but it was a different read which I found very fun and suspenseful.

A mystery, rich for its window to upperclass African American experience.

A bit slow to start (for me), but by the middle of the story, it became an intriguing quick read. Great for the summer.

This is an extraordinary first novel which deals with class, race, and culture. It has a great plot and is extremely well written. A legal thriller of the best kind.
