Book Description:
Due to a loophole in his uncle's will and some fancy paper shuffling, Fred Cassidy has managed to remain a fully subsidized undergraduate for 11 years. His existence is relatively peaceful, interrupted only by his need to keep switching majors and avoiding arrest when he indulges his hobby of climbing tall buildings. Life becomes considerably busier when he starts hearing a mysterious voice in his head and he's attacked by thugs convinced he possesses an alien artifact known as the starstone. When he's rescued by two alien cops disguised as a kangaroo and a wombat, Fred is off on a confusing quest to find the stone, while avoiding both getting killed and getting a degree. This is one of Zelazny's more lighthearted offerings, and a favorite for many fans.

Doorways is my favorite Zelazny book (along with the Amber series). I re-read Doorways every few years. Surprise twists and total nonsense. "Do you feel me, Red?"

After Lord of Light, this one (1976) is probably Zelazny's best-liked science fiction novel. The inventive plot involves a frozen uncle, realistic bad guys, and undercover alien cops. It has wacky inventions: dog suit so alien coppers won't be conspicuous on Earth; a Rhennius machine for reversing one's self and others; and a star stone, the function of which cannot be revealed in a review. The likeable hero Fred Cassidy is an eternal student (a wise-acre polymath, similarly to other Zelaznian protagonists) and a parkour artist before parkour was cool. Zelazny's ideas were copious and odd, but, in the context of the universes in the stories, also consistent and reasonable.

Interesting and action packed, aliens and surprise twists.

I remember this as being a decent sf adventure.
